25 mile Bike Ride
Today, I did a 25 mile bike ride with my friend, Kari. We went at a decent clip. I really want to finish the 25 mile bike ride in under 1:30, so I need to pick up the pace. I still have a while until the event. We went on a trail, so that’s good for no interruptions. We stopped halfway for a water break and snack break

Excellent Brick Workout
So I did my first brick workout. I was going to meet with a triathlon trainer this week, but decided against it since I have a certification test in the next few weeks. I’m going to postpone my meetings with her until after that since I have plenty of time to train. We were going to do a 10 minute bike ride (on a trainer) and a harder run for 1 lap around the track. I ended up doing a similar workout, just inside. I don’t have a bike trainer yet, but am looking to getting one. It was very difficult! I ended up going about 40 minutes with cool down and my heart range was in the high range the entire time! On the running, I did between 6-6.5 miles per hour. I’m aiming for under a 10 minute mile average. I felt like I could keep that pace, so we’ll see! I need to keep up on the speed work.

Stupid squirrels
I rode my bike to work today….7 miles total. It was a nice ride except there was this squirrel that jumped out in front of me on my bike. It was a big one and I didn’t think I could go over it. Therefore I had to stop and couldn’t get out of my clips. You know what that means! I’m a little sore from my fall-mostly my knee and my left hand. This was a relaxing ride-not worrying about speed at all. Later today, I’m going to take Dilly for a walk

Olympic Tri-Here I come!
Last year, I completed 2 sprint tris and loved it. My family is pretty sedentary except for my brother, Mark. He ran marathons and was constantly active, spending most of his lunch hours at the gym. He passed away in 2001 from a brain aneurysm and I feel I should continue his legacy of focusing on health and fitness. Last year was the first year I started competing in events. I started this just by getting in shape. Having never ran more than a mile in PE class, I was frustrated at the gym when I couldn’t get my heart rate to the level I needed for cardio. I decided that day that I was going to try running. That day, I ran 2.5 miles. I was shocked! Then, I started focusing on a 5K race and finally the tris. This year, I’m training for my first Olympic Tri. I’m a bit nervous about the distance, but I’m going to keep working at it!

2.8 mile Run
I ran my normal route after doing a few workouts of speed drills. My normal speed averages around 11 minute miles, but today I did 8:45/mile. I was so excited when I saw that. I even walked a few times. I went 10 minutes and walked for 50 steps, then I ran 4/1 splits. My goal is to run the 6 miles on my tri under 60 minutes (10 minute miles). I felt like that was an unrealistic goal. Now, it looks like I just need to do more speed drills! Afterwards, I went for a massage and my calf muscles and front shoulder muscles were very tight. I’ll have to focus more on stretching those areas.
